As part of my spokesblogger position for Child Hunger Ends Here, I was flown out to LA with 13 other fabulous bloggers. As soon as we got off our planes, we were whisked away to the glamorous LA Regional Food Bank. Sorry, you were hoping for more glamour, but the truth is, these folks are superstars. They may not walk a red carpet, but with only 50 volunteers they managed to feed over a million people last year.
They immediately put us to work, helping with their weekend backpack program which, ensures children eat over the weekends. As moms we all know how packing the lunch works and were asked to pack up the nearly 200 backpacks they give out weekly. Us multitaskers went so fast we were asked multiple times to slow down for the cameras. Look, don’t ask 14 moms to wipe out and pack 100s of backpacks without expecting it to get done in quickly and efficiently.
Our guide, the manager or the LA Regional Food Bank, explained that in this economy child hunger happens more frequently than we can imagine. The loss of a job or a health emergency can quickly send a family into a downward spiral.
They grow their own produce and herbs just outside of the food bank with a “vertical farm” and encourage the community to use this resource.
The next day, we were escorted to the slightly more glamorous set of Wisteria Lane for a media event that included Dana Delany and David Arquette (spokespeople for the cause.)
Plus other involved celebs like, Ali Sweeney, Stephanie Pratt, the cast from the Real Housewives of Orange County, Melissa Rivers and others, whom I probably should have recognized… but didn’t. If it weren’t for the fact that me and 13 other bloggers were wearing matching gray polos, I would have felt like a celeb myself.
Above you’ll find a little footage from the event and below is an interview I did for Mingle Media TV. See, that’s quasi-celebish.
