I Could Use Some Helping Hands | On a Mission Monday

March 22nd, 2010

I’ve always been amazed at how moms manage to find the time to take on a cause.  My compassionate side is always willing to

lend a hand, but then once I’ve put myself on some committee or said “Yes” to the umpteenth request to help out, I end up feeling resentful.  Between being a WAHM (work at home mom,) being a parent to my 2 children… my husband, my cat and my dog, folding mountains of laundry and being on the carousel of washing and putting away dishes, I often don’t know my darks from my lights (a little cleaning humor for you.)  All this being said, I’m glad I took on this job to help bring awareness to the cause Child Hunger Ends Here and I’ll tell you why, because I get to ask YOU to help out.  That’s right, I get to be one of those do gooders that solicits the help of others that have piles of laundry and PTA meetings and school volunteer schedules… and it feel s so good. (Also, feeding hungry children is a really worthy cause!)

You’re probably thinking, but Jenny from the Blog, it’s so easy to say no to you.  I don’t have to worry about seeing you in the carpool lane or having you stop me in the halls and ask me if I’ve done my part.  Yes, you are correct and that is why I am about to guilt you into helping out with some shocking statistics and pictures of sad hungry children. MWAHAHA.

“>Facts that will pull at your heart –or maybe- purse strings:

“>-17 million American children don’t know where their next meal is coming from?  That’s 1 in 4 children.  3 million of them are under 5.

“>-Babies that don’t get proper nourishment are 30% more likely to be hospitalized and 90% more likely to be in fair or poor health.

“>-1 in 10 households that do receive food aid reports that children still miss meals.

“>Let me know what you choose to do, even if it’s an online donation (amount does not need to be disclosed)  PS $1 dollars provides 20lbs of food!  So if each of my readers donated a single dollar there would be like million of pounds– I don’t want to brag about my readership.

“>Donate Moolah- Make a secure, online donation to Feeding America®, where a $1 donation can provide 20 pounds of food and grocery products to people facing hunger in our country.

“>Donate Food- Find out more about donating food to hungry Americans.

“>Donate Time- Learn more about Kids Cafes. You can also volunteer at your local food bank.

“>Hold a Rally -by rally I mean bake sale, lemonade stand, rummage sale, or a sale you can work into a  community function and donate the proceeds.

“>Help with my rally-  I will be doing a couple things in the So.Fla. area & need volunteers!  If you want to help out, please contact me at: jenny@thesuburbanjungle.com

“>Spread Awareness -If you or someone you know is or has been affected by hunger please tell us about it.

“>Thanks in advance for your help.  In return I promise to continue to make you laugh and won’t chase you down and ask what you’ve done for the cause!

Jenny, you are amazing! I’m so happy to see you using your influence for a really good cause, when so many bloggers are throwing up reviews and product “placement.” I would love to help in NJ, a bake sale would be easy, I can donate half to my school and half to CHEH. I will let you know how it goes!

  2. Mara T. says:

I’m in. I love your stuff and I think this is a cool cause. Also, don’t tell, but I’ve said no to a few things recently and I like how this sounds easy to do. I just donated $5 to the website so that’s like 100lbs of food, but I can also let my kids do a lemonade stand in front of the house. I want them to see that meals don’t come free to everyone. GOOD LUCK

  3. Cherie says:

What do you want me to do? You know you can count on me for help.

  4. Thanks so much for the offers. Beth and Mara, please keep me posted. You can email me at jenny@thesuburbanjungle.com to go over idea. Mara, thanks for making a donation! 100lbs is quite a lot of food. Cherie, we’ll discuss, I would love your help!

There couldn’t be a more worthy cause than feeding children. There should be no hungry children anywhere in the world, and especially not in a country as rich as ours. (One more reason to hate Republicans, who love to pay for unnecessary wars and cut programs for kids! Just had to say it.)
Thanks for the work you do Jenny.

  6. Rachel says:

I love your blogs. Don’t know how you find time to do all you do. I went to the CHEH website and made a donation.

  11. Diane- YOU ROCK. More than me thanking you, which I do, many children who would otherwise not eat, thank you! If you don’t mind I will make this part of a blog in a couple weeks. Your, Jenny From the Blog
